The Old Sheldon Church Ruins is a special landmark in Beaufort County. Depending on where a visitor is coming from, it could be the very first important landmark that they will encounter. My lifelong best friend/ cousin grew up in Yamassee, SC. He is almost exactly 1 year older than me and has always been my older brother, so naturally I we would be at each other’s house essentially every week of my childhood. On countless trips to or from his house we would take a short detour to go to the church ruins. We would be told the story of General Sherman’s troops burning down the church. Every October my uncle would take a bunch of me and my cousins here to tell us about the ghosts the haunted the ruins’ grounds. The Old Sheldon Church Ruins will always hold a special place in the history of Beaufort in the same way it does to me and my cousin.
